Our Year 3 children would like to invite their family and friends into our school at 9.10am on Monday 19th July for their family assembly. We hope to see you there!

We are holding a summer disco for our children on Wednesday 21st July from 5.30 - 7.00pm. Tickets for the event cost £1.50 and are available from the school office. Staff will be on duty so parents do not need to stay. Refreshments will be available during the event.

Could children in Years 1, 2, 3 & 4 please make sure they have their P.E. kit in school on sports day with a top the colour of their house: Endeavour - yellow, Voyager - blue, Explorer - green and Challenger - red. Thank you for your continued support.

Our school sports days will be held at 1.30pm on Thursday 15th July for children in Years1, 2, 3, and 4, our Nursery morning children will hold theirs at 10.30am on Friday 16th July and our afternoon Nursery children and Reception class children will hold theirs at 1.30pm on Friday 16th July. Family and friends are welcome to come along and enjoy the fun - weather permitting!

Our Reception children are having a 'Teddy Bear's Picnic' this Thursday 15th July. Could each child please bring in their teddies and a little something for the picnic (eg; fruit, biscuits). Thank you.

Tuesday 13th July is transfer day this year when your child will visit their new class and spend time with their new teachers. Our Year 4 children will spend the day at their new middle school.

Due to a change of staffing in Year 3 we have changed the date of the assembly to Friday 16th July 2010, sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
The Year 1 assembly which was postponed due to illness is now to be held on Friday 9th July and Year 2 remains the same on Thursday 8th July. All assemblies will begin at 9.10am. We hope to see everyone there!

A free first aid course will be held at our school on Thursday 10th June 2010. The course starts at 9.15am and ends at 2.45pm. There are free crèche places available. Anyone interested can add their name to our list by calling at the school office.

On Tuesday 1st June 2010 Bedlington Extended Services invites you to a great day out for families with children aged 5 - 9, including movement and games, story making and telling, investigating materials and arts and crafts. The event is being held at Guidepost Children's Enterprise Centre from 10am - 3pm. We are holding our annual 'Stars in their Eyes' competition on Tuesday 6th July so in preparation for this we will be holding auditions on Tuesday 8th June which is the first Tuesday back after the half term break. If your child would like to take part please call at the school office to complete a consent form. Thank you.

For parents of those children who are in the 'Growing Minds' group, please remember there is a session on Tuesday 8th June 2010.

The first week back after half term we will be holding a 'World Cup Week' - each class will be learning about a different country:

Events taking place will include a KS2 football tournament, KS1 sports afternoon, design a football strip, food tasting plus many more activities. The week will end with a World Cup non-uniform day on Friday 11th June. On this day we would like children to come to school dressed in the colours of their country for a grand festival!

Next week is 'Walk to School Week' and here at Stead Lane we are promoting a healthy lifestyle. The children will be encouraged to walk to school and Key Stages 1 & 2 will receive a 'Walk to School' diary. Children who walk to school all week will receive a certificate, so leave the car at home and get walking!

We will be holding a book fair at the end of November and to help you and your child benefit from this we are starting a saving scheme where your child can bring money into school each week and receive a sticker to stick on their card, each sticker is worth 20p so the amount saved can be anything from 20p per week. There are just over 20 school weeks between now and the fair so even 20p per week would enable your child to make a purchase. Or why not start early for Christmas and save now to buy books as gifts! Don't forget we receive commission for our school funds so the more you save and spend the more it helps us buy new resources. Thank you to parents who attended our anti-bullying workshop and children's assemblies this week. We have put together ideas suggested by our parents. Please see our leaflet distributed today.

Just a reminder that Rhona Wilson, Behaviour and Attendance Consultant for Northumberland County Council will be running a short workshop on Monday 29th March, 2.00-3.00pm. Parents will have the opportunity to find out about the events their children will be participating in during our Anti-Bullying Week and contribute their own ideas to our new anti-bullying policy. To help us plan and resource this event, we would be grateful if you could complete and return the attached reply slip on Monday.

We are holding our 'Decorated Egg Competition' again this year. We will be awarding prizes for 'Child's Own Work' and 'Family Effort' categories in each year group. Get your thinking caps on! Eggs should be brought into school on Monday 29th March where they will be displayed in the hall.

Our Nursery children would like to invite their families into our school at 10.30am for morning chidren and 2.00pm for afternoon children on Thursday 25th March to join them in an activity in their classroom. We hope to see you all there!

Your child's class teacher invites you into school on either Tuesday 23rd or Wednesday 24th March from 3.30pm onwards to talk through your child's progress. Appointment charts are outside your child's classroom so anyone who would like to come along can sign up to a time slot.

This term we are organising a bullying awareness week to help our children understand what we mean by 'bullying' and to develop potential strategies to combat this. Teaching staff have been working hard to review our school anti-bullying policy and procedure this term and we would welcome the views of children and parents. Therefore there will be an anti-bullying parent workshop on Monday 19th March at 2.00pm, led by Rhona Wilson, Consultant for Behaviour and Attendance.
You are also invited to our 'Anti-bullying' class assemblies at the end of the week, when children will be sharing their work. These will be held on Thursday 1st April:
• Years 1 & 2 - 9.10am
• Years 3 & 4 - 2.00pm.
Older children may go home with parents following the afternoon assembly.

Following the success of our literacy sessions last year, I have arranged a series of numeracy parent workshops for the summer term. These will take place on a Tuesday morning 9.00 - 10.30am for 8 weeks, with a free crèche available in school. The course is geared at helping parents to support their children in maths, especially as many of the methods used to teach children maths today have changed since we went to school! More details to follow.

During our Spring Fair we will have a toy and book stall, bric-a-brac stall, tombola, raffles for adults and children and a cake stall. If you could donate to any of these stalls it would be greatly appreciated.

We are holding our Spring Fair on Wednesday 31st March 2010 from 1.00 - 3.00pm, this is a family event and we ask that you accompany your child. We have various events for all of the family. Tickets cost £1.50 per child (adults free) and this includes juice, crisps and a turn on a number of our activities, extra attractions will also be available at a small charge. Please note: only children who purchase a ticket and have an accompanying adult will be allowed to enjoy the fair - unfortunately children without an adult will stay in class and not take any part. We hope to see you all there.

Our Year 4 children invited their families and friends into school to join in with some fun activities during our 'Chocolate' topic! We dressed up as characters from 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.'

We invited our Dad's into school for the afternoon to take part in a challenge with their children. We all had great fun!

Our Challenger team won the merit race last term so had their treat at Bounce Soft Play in Blyth.

Our Year 3 activity morning is on Thursday 25th February 2010 at 10.00am. All family and friends are invited to come along and enjoy some time in class with your child. Hope to see you there.

Our Stepping Stones group will continue on Tuesday 23rd February at 2.15pm for those parents who attend. Keep up the good work in the holidays!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Haiti appeal through our non-uniform day, we raised over £220 for the appeal.

The Valentine's Disco Tickets are now on sale at a cost of £1.50 and are available from the school office - we have booked G-Force this time so it's not to be missed! Hot dogs and a tuck shop will be available on the night. The Disco is being held on Tuesday 9th February from 5.30 - 7.00pm. Staff will be on duty during this event so adults do not need to stay with children.

SAMARITAN'S PURSE APPEAL

We collected 34 shoe boxes for the Samaritan's Purse Appeal which were sent off to Kazhakstan.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 invite all families and friends into our school at 2.00pm on Wednesday 16th December to sing 'Carols Around the Christmas Tree'.

Our Year 3 & Year 4 children are holding their Carol Service at Bedlington Colliery Methodist Church at 10.00am on Wednesday 16th December. All family and friends welcome.

School will provide a drink of juice for all children, could parents please provide some food. So we have a variety, could boys please bring sweet items and girls bring savoury. Thank you. Children are allowed to come to school in their party clothes on those days or they can bring them to change into.

We raised £336.16 for Children in Need this year, thank you once again to all those who returned their smartie tubes filled with money.

A big thank you to everyone who donated shoe boxes for the Samaritan's Purse appeal, our school managed to send 34 boxes which are now on their way to Kazakhstan.

Our Christmas Lunch will be on Wednesday 16th December. Please call at the school office for more information.

Tickets are now available for our Christmas Fair & Disco. Tickets cost £1.50 per child under 13 (accompanying adults free) and are available from the school office. PLEASE NOTE: Children must be accompanied by an adult at this event. We would appreciate any donations for our raffle, tombola and cake stall.

Our children in main school are holding their Christmas performances altogether on two occasions but due to health & safety regulations places are limited so please complete and return your application for tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment (forms available from the school office).

All parents and friends of Stead Lane are invited to our 'Eco Coffee Afternoon' on Wednesday 11th November at 2.15pm. There will be no charge for coffee, but donations are welcome to go towards sponsoring our tiger in Bengal.
This will be a great opportunity to view samples of children's work on display around school and meet Lorna Blenkinsop, Waste Education & Recycling Officer, to talk about our Eco-Start Project.

Our Harvest Festivals were held in Bedlington Colliery Methodist Church with Key Stage 2 in the morning and Reception and Key Stage 1 in the afternoon. Lots of our families and friends came along to watch two wonderful services.

Our Year 3 children had a great morning looking around the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.

After lunch we walked along the quayside in Newcastle and looked at all of the bridges.

Thank you to everyone who donated produce to our Harvest Festival, we have sent out lots of bulging bags of goodies to needy people in our local area. Also thank you to everyone who attended our services at church - our children were, as always, fantastic!

Our Year 4 children held a very emotional leaving assembly!

Our Year 3 children held a cafe afternoon where parents and friends could come into school and enjoy healthy food and drink prepared by the class.

Our Year 3 children invited their families and friends into school to see what things they had been learning this year.

Our annual Stars in their Eyes event was a fantastic event with the hall packed full of people wanting to see some budding talent and they weren't disappointed!

We all had great fun at our Sports Day despite the weather!

Our PEEPS Nursery group held a party during their last session. Thank you to everyone for their support throughout the sessions.

Our Year 4 children thought about building a town - what buildings they would include in their town and what jobs peolpe would do. They then built their own mini towns!

Our Year 2 children were allowed to visit RAF Boulmer and look around the base learning all about the different jobs within the Royal Air Force. We all had a great day and felt really privileged to be given the chance to look around such an important place.

Our Year 4 class visited the redevelopment of Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth. We took a look at what the Arcade will look like when completed and we had a tour of the site learning about all of the different people who are needed to do the different jobs.

Year 2 took part in the 'Crimson Closet Workshop' where we talked about different creative jobs.

Our Year 1 children visited QEII Park & Hotel. They looked around the hotel and restaurant and learned about the many jobs people do within the hotel.

Our Year 3 children took part in a 'Clowning Around Workshop' where we were given a budget and we had to produce our products within our budget then make a profit. It was great fun!

As part of our Enterprise Week our Year 1 children visited Blyth Fire Station to look at all the different roles within the fire service.

During our 'What I want to be when I grow up' week our Year 1 children took part in a Guess Who Workshop dressing up as people who do different jobs.

Our Year 3 children are opening their own café. The children will be making their own produce to sell in the café, such as muffins, smoothies and flapjack. All parents/carers are invited from any children in our school and if you visit the café your child will be allowed out of their class to join you for an afternoon snack. Tickets for the café are 50p per adult and this entitles you to unlimited tea or coffee for that afternoon - please call at the school office for more information.. We are once again holding our 'Stars in their Eyes' event on Tuesday 14th July 2009. If your child wishes to audition, these will be held during the afternoon of Monday 15th June so please collect a consent form from the school office before this date. Thank you.

We are supporting the 'Fire Fighters Charity' while raising money for our school by taking part in a recycling scheme. As you bring your children to school on Thursday 11th June there will be a van parked in the main school driveway waiting for your items to be recycled. We ask that you put any unwanted clean, dry clothing, sheets, curtains and towels into one bag and shoes, belts and handbags into another then bring them to school with you on this day. On your way into the school grounds you can then load them into the van - you get tidier cupboards, the 'Fire Fighters Charity' receives a donation and so do our school! Trinity Youth Association have organised a disco to be held on Wednesday 10th June from 5.00 - 6.30pm. Tickets for this event will cost £1.50 and are available through our school. If your child is interested please call at the school office with your payment where you will be asked to complete a consent form and receive more information. On Monday 8th June 2009 our Year 4 children will be visiting the newly opened Great North Museum - Hancock. Our Healthy Tuck Shop is open every Friday at break time, each item costs 20p so if your child would like to purchase any items they need to hand their money to the class teacher when they arrive at school at 9.00am and they will be given a token at break time.

Next Friday Year 4 invites all children to bring their copper into school to make a money line to raise money for their Enterprise Africa Scheme. Each class will have the opportunity to make as many lines as possible. Please give generously.

Unfortunately due to a double booking at Bedlington Colliery Methodist Church our KS1 Easter service is on Thursday 2nd April at 1.00pm at the church not 10.00am as previously stated. Our KS2 service is at 2.00pm in the school hall on the same day. Our KS1 service at 1.00pm will be finished in time for parents to get back to school for our KS2 service for those who have children in both. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. We hope to see you all there.

Our Year 2 children and parents who have taken part in this term's Stepping Stones reading group are invited to their last session on Tuesday 31st March at 2.15pm. Please return all resource packs on this day. Thank you.

On Thursday 2nd April 2009 we are holding our Easter services:
• Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 service is to be held at Bedlington Colliery Methodist Church at 10am where parents are welcome to attend.
• Our Year 3 and Year 4 service is at 2pm in the school hall where parents are also welcome to attend. (Any parent wanting to take their children home after the afternoon service is welcome to do so).

During our Spring Fair we will be having a toy and book stall, bric-a-brac stall, tombola, raffles for adults and children and a cake stall. If you could donate to any of these stalls it would be greatly appreciated. So please empty your cupboards!

We are holding our Spring Fair on Wednesday 1st April 2009 from 1.00 - 3.00pm, this is a family event and we ask that you accompany your child. We have various events for all of the family. Tickets cost £1.50 per child (adults free) and this includes juice, crisps and a turn on a number of our activities, extra attractions will also be available at a small charge. Tickets can be reserved at the school office and they will be distributed to your child just before the fair begins. Please note: only children who purchase a ticket and have an accompanying adult will be allowed to enjoy the fair - children without an adult will stay in class and not take any part. We hope to see you all there!

We are once again holding our decorated egg competitions. There are two categories for each class:
• Child's own work
• Family contribution

Thank you to everyone who donated to Red Nose Day. We all had lots of fun and raised £156.60 for the cause. Well done everyone!

Our Year 2 children have been invited to attend a Dance Festival at Blyth Community College during the morning of Friday 27th March 2009. To take part in the festival they need white t-shirts, black shorts and a bottle of water - all with names on please. We are holding a dress rehearsal on Monday so would appreciate it if you could send the shorts and t-shirt into school on this day. Thank you.

We would like to thank all our families who entered the 'Name the Rocket' competition. Popular themes included famous astronauts, planets and rockets. The winning names are:

As a staff, we are very keen to reward good work and celebrate excellent behaviour. Following the Easter holidays, we will be introducing a new 'house point' system at Stead Lane. The children will be divided into four 'houses' or teams. Each week merits will be earned for good behaviour, effort, work etc. Individually children will work towards earning Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates. Collectively each team will be competing to win a house treat which the children will choose.

TEAM NAME COMPETITION
We have chosen a 'Space' theme for our teams. Each team will be represented by a different coloured rocket. And now for your cooperation - can you or your child think of four imaginative names for our teams. If so, please complete the slip attached and return to school. A prize will be awarded for the winning suggestion

Our Healthy Tuck Shop is open on Friday 13th March. If your child would like to purchase a healthy item at break time please send 20p into school with them on that day which your child must hand to their teacher on arrival in exchange for a token. The token can then be exchanged for various healthy items which include fruit, fruit salad and toast, all of which were requested by you and your children via our survey. If we have a good response on this day then our Healthy Tuck Shop will be open every Friday break time.

We would like your child to come to school dressed in red, with a wacky hairstyle next Friday 13th March and in return we ask that they make a donation of 50p or £1.00 to Comic Relief!

Our Year 4 children would like to invite their families into school at 10.00am on Thursday 12th March to take part in their activity morning. This term our children have been learning about a number of challenges that face Africa today. The children would like to raise money to send a charitable donation to help other children less fortunate than themselves. As part of this enterprise they will be selling refreshments during the morning. We hope to see lots of our families there to help this worthy cause.

Thursday 5th March is 'World Book Day', your child will be participating in a number of fun book activities on the day.

We have rearranged our Valentine disco for Thursday 5th March, 5.30 - 7.00pm. If your child has a ticket please just bring it along with them on this day. If your child would like a ticket there are still some available. Refreshments and a children's raffle will be available during the event.

Our Year 3 children invite their families into school for their activity morning on Thursday 5th March at 10.00am. Please come along and join in our fun morning.

Our Year 2 visit to Holy island is on Monday 2nd March. Please remember all children will need to wear warm waterproof clothes and suitable shoes for the visit. School uniform need not be worn. Any child who suffers from travel sickness must take medication before leaving home in the morning. If your child has not already ordered a packed lunch from school they need to bring one from home. If we have not already received your consent slip please return it with your payment on Monday as your child will not be allowed to travel without it. Thank you.

Thank you to all parents who attended our fundraising event on 12th February, we raised £253.28 which will go towards buying waterproofs and wellies for most children.
We still have some unclaimed raffle prizes so please check the lists on Nursery and Reception doors to see if you have been lucky - all prizes must be claimed on or before Friday 6th March 2009.

There will be no Homework Club on Tuesday 24th February as Mr Jones will not be in school that day. If your child usually attends please collect them at 3.00pm. The club will resume the following week. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

As described in last week's newsletter, recent changes in the curriculum have meant that all children in Nursery and Reception are spending a great deal of their time outdoors in all weathers. We appreciate that most of our parents provide warm, waterproof clothing but that it can be distressing and time consuming to keep this clothing dry and clean. In order to overcome this problem we would like your help in raising some funds to buy waterproof trousers and coats for all our foundation stage children. We would like to invite you to our fundraising day on Thursday 12th February. We will be holding 2 sessions - one at 10.30am and the other at 2.00pm (we are aware that there are other events on at this time so we would welcome your attendance at either session).
We would also welcome any donations you can provide for tombola and raffle stalls.

Just a reminder to those parents of our Year 2 children who attend our ‘Stepping Stones Reading Group’, the group will not be on next Tuesday 3rd February as the class are visiting Holy Island. The group will resume on Tuesday 10th February at 2.15pm.

Following the success of our coffee morning this week, we look forward to an excellent turn out for our parent classes which start next Thursday, 9.00 – 10.30am. A free crèche facility is available on site for parents with pre-school age children.

During this session parents will be shown some strategies that are used in school when teaching early reading skills and some useful tips on hearing your child read at home. Next Friday, 30th January, Nursery are having a ‘Creative Day’ and would love you to come along and have some fun with your child. You can make junk models, paint, draw, build things out of lego – whatever you and your child would like to do together!
To enable you to have as much fun as possible, learning and playing with your child we’d appreciate it if you could make alternative childcare arranements for younger brothers/sisters.
Please let Mrs. Mallin or Mrs. Athey know if you would like to come. Could parents/carers please arrive at 10.30am for our morning Nursery session and 2.00pm for our afternoon Nursery session. Please bring children at their normal starting time.
